Veterans Benefits and Social Security

There is a wide range of special cash benefits, medical services and other programs available to Veterans with disabilities. It is possible for certain Veterans to receive a form of Veteran disability benefit payment as well as a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit payment. Receipt of one form of federal benefit may affect eligibility for or the payment amount due from another federal benefit system. The rules governing how federal agencies view benefits from other federal agencies can be very complex. Because of these complexities it is important for each Employment Network (EN) to have a qualified benefits advisor on staff or to refer these individuals to a qualified benefits advisor for assistance in benefits planning.

Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) projects are organizations authorized by Social Security to provide free benefits counseling to Social Security disability beneficiaries to make informed choices about work. WIPA Community Work Incentives Coordinators (CWIC) acquire and maintain a complete understanding of Social Security's disability programs and other Federal public benefits.
